Casting net

The cast net is a circular fishing net with small weights distributed around the entire circumference of the mesh. The net is thrown in such a way that it opens as wide as possible before falling into the water and when it comes into contact with it, it immediately sinks. According to historians, the cast net arrived in Florianópolis with Azorean immigrants, around the year 1750. In the Azores region, an archipelago in Portugal, the accessory was used for cod fishing, but, as it is a net that allows capturing a wide variety of fish, it was quickly adapted to the waters here.

To this day on Ilha da Magia, many fishermen keep the art of making their own cast nets alive, according to them it is a network that makes a direct connection with the past.
