Public market
The Florianópolis Municipal Public Market is a commerce center and historic public building in Florianópolis, and considered one of the main tourist attractions in the Historic Center of the capital of Santa Catarina. The history of the Market began even before the building was constructed. In the same place, in the 17th and 18th centuries, peddlers set up their stalls and sold various products. In 1845, when it was reported that Dom Pedro II would visit the region, the vendors were removed as a way of hiding the precarious situation and lack of hygiene, the stalls were removed with the promise that a new location would be built.
Only in 1848, a law approved the construction of the market that would be located in Largo do Palácio, on the seafront and then, after much political conflict, the first Public Market building was built only in 1851, located south of Largo da Matriz , next to the sea, and on February 5, 1899, the building was transferred to its current location, at the time also on the seafront, with only one wing. The second wing was only delivered on January 24, 1931, built on a landfill, as well as the connecting bridges and the central span. Some fires destroyed part of the architecture, the first was on June 6, 1988, caused by a gas leak during a renovation process. Later on August 19, 2005, an electric fryer with vegetable oil started burning the entire north wing of the Florianópolis Public Market. The firefighters were called and were at the scene within five minutes, but it was not possible to save the wing, which was renovated by a consortium between the city hall and the state government and is still in operation today.
