Floriano Peixoto

Floriano Peixoto, known as the “Iron Marshal”, was a soldier and the second President of the Republic of Brazil, responsible for consolidating the republican regime. Along with Deodoro da Fonseca, he belonged to the period called the “Republic of the Sword” (1889 to 1894), since the first two presidents were military men. In his three years of government as president, he faced the Federalist Revolution in Rio Grande do Sul, which began in February 1893. The nickname "Iron Marshal" became popular due to the force with which the president suppressed both the Federalist Revolution, which occurred in the city of Desterro (currently Florianópolis), such as the Second Armada Revolt.

The city of Florianópolis, current capital of the state of Santa Catarina, was called Desterro until the end of the 19th century. With the outcome of the Federalist Revolution in 1894, as a way of belittling supporters of political decentralism, the state governor, Hercílio Luz, changed the name to Florianópolis, in honor of Floriano Peixoto.
