Square XV

Praça XV de Novembro, also popularly known as Praça XV or Praça da Figueira, is a square located in the Centro neighborhood, in the city of Florianópolis. It is located in the place where the city was founded, with the village of Vila de Nossa Senhora do Desterro having left from there. The Square garden was built between 1885 and 1887. During this period it was called Largo da Matriz or Largo do Palácio, due to its proximity to the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Government Palace, and also to Praça Barão da Laguna. The square ended up receiving its definitive name in honor of the day of the Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil.

Being considered the heart of the Center of Florianópolis, Praça rehearsals of samba schools and street blocks during the Florianópolis carnival. To this day, Velha Figueira, in the center of the square, is a reference point and an obligatory stop for tourists, with an attraction in its own right and a postcard of the city.
