TAC

The Álvaro de Carvalho Theater (TAC), located in the Center of Florianópolis, began its construction with the laying of the foundation stone (ceremony of placing the first block of stone) on July 29, 1857. It was only on June 5, 1871 that the Theatre, until then called Santa Isabel, honoring Princess Isabel, was used, even though it was not completed.

The official inauguration took place on September 7, 1875, with the presence of more than a thousand people. The marches and counter-marches of politics have always influenced the progress of conservation and improvement works. Furthermore, there were many complaints about the lighting, the chairs, the cigarette smoke, and the excessive heat in the audience. Everything was a reason for broad discussions among the people in general. Remembering that the theater was the place of meeting, fun and culture par excellence in those times. Due to the mismatch of opinions and interests, the theater went through a period of abandonment, even serving as a prison, but even so, time was found for a resolution that, on July 2, 1894, changed the name to Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho, in a fair tribute to the first playwright from Santa Catarina. Between construction and debut, abandonments and seasons, emotions and tears, the Álvaro de Carvalho Theater has reached its present day. It currently occupies a prominent place not only as an architectural piece, but as a legitimate cultural heritage of all people from Santa Catarina, deservedly listed since 1988, under the custody of the Santa Catarina Culture Foundation, a place open to visitors and the most talented manifestations of the noble arts.
