Arvoredo Island
Arvoredo Island is an ecological paradise on the coast of Florianópolis and is named after the sailor Álvares Soares de Oliveira, one of the first soldiers to take care of the lighthouse on the island. With a total area of two hundred and seventy hectares, the depth around it remains between three and forty meters, with the bottom made up mainly of rocks and sand and is part of the Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve.
On Arvoredo Island there is a cave, called Gruta do Monge, legend has it that a monk appeared on the island and was found by fishermen from Ponta das Canas and Canasvieiras. The monk healed and taught medicine, until one day, just as he appeared, he disappeared and no one ever saw him or heard anything about him again.
