Sambaqui

Sambaqui is a neighborhood and a beach in Florianópolis, in the Santo Antônio district of Lisbon. It is approximately 17 km from the center of Florianópolis, and its beach is 1.10 km long. The name comes from the existence of piles of shells scattered across the beach sand, which sometimes reveal fossilized animals, as well as remains of ancient indigenous communities in the region. Located in the western region of Florianópolis, Sambaqui, together with the neighboring neighborhood of Santo Antônio de Lisboa, was the place chosen by the first Azorean immigrants, in the mid-18th century, to take up residence on the Island.

With a calm sea with a stunning setting and an unforgettable sunset, it has a panoramic view of the North Bay and the Continent. Fishing is still traditional, including oyster farming. For those looking for tranquility and a charming landscape, there are many bars by the sea and several restaurants. The Sambaqui community fights to preserve their customs and traditions through religious dances and incentives for folk dance groups, such as Boi de Mamão.
